COASTAL / ENCLOSED SEA GUIDE AND INSTRUCTOR TRAINING COURSE

Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September 2019

This course is the Paddle Queensland pathway to prepare the participant for the Coastal Guide, Enclosed Sea Guide or Enclosed Sea Instructor Assessment to achieve their Paddle Australia qualification.

Award Definitions:

The Paddle Australian Qualification Scheme (PAQS) is the industry benchmark certification designed to meet the need for paddling qualifications for use in education, recreational and tourism sectors nationwide.

Coastal Guide Award

The Coastal Guide Award is for people seeking professional certification in coastal water paddling environments using sit-on-top craft.

Holders of the Coastal Guide Award have demonstrated the ability to plan and conduct guided kayaking activities in sit on top kayaks in coastal conditions defined as:

  • Estuaries, embayment’s and areas enclosed or partially enclosed by fringing reef or islands
  • Areas of exposed coastline that are simple, not involving overfalls, tidal races, difficult landings or open crossings may be included
  • Distances of up to 1 nautical mile from the nearest shore
  • Conditions below Fresh (17 knots) as defined by the Beaufort Scale and used by the Bureau of Meteorology
  • Breaking (overtopping) waves (sea) up to 0.5m
  • Surf to 0.5m

i.e.: - you are able to impart the skills required for participants to partake in a half/day trip with you, where if anything goes wrong you are there to deal with it.

Enclosed Sea Guide Award

The Enclosed Sea Guide Award is for people seeking professional certification in enclosed sea paddling environments using sea kayaks.

Holders of the Enclosed Sea Guide Award are qualified to guide groups of novices on activity and day-based programs in sea kayaks in enclosed waters defined as Bays and Harbours:

  • Moderate conditions (forecast or 11 – 16 knots)
  • Assessed in minimum winds of 11 – 16 knots
  • Max 1.5 nautical miles from shore
  • Breaking (overtopping) waves (sea) up to 0.5m
  • No surf

i.e.: - you are able to impart the skills required for participants to partake in a half/day trip with you, where if anything goes wrong you are there to deal with it.

Enclosed Sea Instructor Award

The Enclosed Sea Instructor Award is for people seeking professional certification in enclosed sea paddling environments using sea kayaks.

Holders of the Enclosed Sea Instructor Award are qualified to train individuals and groups on activity and day-based programs in sea kayaks in enclosed sea defined as Bays and Harbours:

  • Moderate conditions (forecast or 11 – 16 knots)
  • Assessed in minimum winds of 11 – 16 knots
  • Max 1.5 nautical miles from shore
  • Breaking (overtopping) waves (sea) up to 0.5m
  • No surf

i.e.: - you are able to train a group of beginner students with practical and theory sessions to a level where they are able to plan and undertake a trip on their own (and/or pass the enclosed sea skills award), where if anything goes wrong, you have trained the students to deal with it.

Pre-Requisites:

  • Personal paddling skills as defined in the PAQS coastal or enclosed skills awards
  • Recommended obtaining prior to course:
    • First Aid and CPR certificates (appropriate to your organisations requirements & area of operation)
    • some experience and logged hours working as an assistant or observer under training

Course Description:

  • The Paddle Queensland Training Course consists of two full days approximately 8:00am to 5:00pm each day
  • Participants should expect each day to consist of approximately half a day in a semi classroom-style environment and the other half of each day on the water
  • Candidates must be prepared to put their skills into practice and will be required to do some work prior to the course to assist in moving swiftly through the syllabus
  • Participants should come prepared for paddling sessions in both the morning and afternoon of the course
  • Please note:
    • this is a guide and instructor training course
    • it is not a skills course
    • candidates are expected to have the personal paddling skills as identified in the “Coastal or Enclosed Sea Skills Award” prior to commencement of the course
    • an assessment day is also required to obtain the full certification
