Event Description

The Barron River Challenge is a downriver paddle race between Mareeba and Kuranda in tropical North Queensland. There are 4 race distances to suit most down river paddlers. Most craft are catered for.

BRC12; a 12km paddle with grade 1 challenges as paddlers wind through tight river bends and down delighful river races.

BRC20; extending the course a further 8 km see paddlers follow the river as it bends east to finish at Bilwon. Though challenged by a few wave trains, it is fatigue rather than the rapids which results in the occasional swim.

BRC30; Sunday sees paddlers take on a series grade 2 rapids strewn between Koah and Kuranda. The now ledgendary Oak forest rapid usually rolls a few craft who refuse the portage offered. Kevlar verses Plastic has been the debate for 9 years now.

BRC50; Overnight rest at Bilwon Farms finds paddlers refreshed for the challenge downriver to Kuranda. The Barroness and Barron are not confident until the last rapid- Ireland rapid is negotiated 2 km from the finish. The split 50km race is suitable for solo kayakers, doubles and racing teams of paddlers.
