Event Description

TASSIE  NTS CAMP BRADYS / MERSEY  DECEMBER 9th to 12th  2017

Hosted by the Derwent Canoe Club and Australian Canoeing

The NTS will again travel to Tassie for an extended Mersey/Brady’s double. This camp will involve extensive white water paddling. The Mersey River is a fun grade 3 river, Brady’s Lake is steep and fast water and is grade 4.

The Mersey course is situated in the Mersey White water reserve, which is 75 minutes drive from Devonport or Launceston and 3.5 hours drive from Hobart. It is also 35 min drive from accomadation towns of Mole Creek and 40 min drive from Gowrie Park.

Brady’s Lake is in the dead centre of Tasmania and is about 2.5 hours from Hobart, Launceston or Devonport.

NTS CAMP

The NTS camp be a camp of two halves, firstly at the Mersey from Friday  December 9th to Sunday December 11th .This part of the camp will commence at 11.00am at the Arm River Camp on Friday December 9th  and finish after the Tasmanian Championships on Sunday December 11th.

Those paddlers going to Brady’s will then drive to Tarraleah or Bronte Park (2.5 hours) on Sunday afternoon. The Brady’s part of the camp is the second half of the camp. This part of the camp will run through to 4pm on Tuesday December 12th, this will enable those flying out or going on the big boat to make departures out of Devonport, Launceston and Hobart.

The second part of the camp is at Bradys Lake on difficult grade 3-4 water, you need to be very competent at rolling and have the technical competence to be able to get in and out of every eddy at Penrith to be considered for this part of the camp. If in doubt check with your coach.

PARENTS

Each paddler will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult this is to ensure guardianship duty of care is arranged.

WATER UNCERTAINTY AND PROGRAM CHANGE

The paddling community in Tasmania have a wonderful relationship with the hydro however even they cant control rainfall; water flows are only ever 70% certain. If either site has problems the camp will still run but maybe with an altered program including the possible use of the Broken Bridge (40min from Hobart towards Brady’s) or the Forth River.

ACCOMADATION

MERSEY

The Arm River camp and bunkhouse at the Mersey River is booked for December 9th and 10th . At this point I anticipate some but not all paddlers, coaches and parents will be able to stay at Arm River. Arm River is a 2 star quality bunkhouse. All camp participants will need to bring their own sleeping bags and pillows. For those wanting a more comfortable set up I suggest the Mole Creek Guesthouse or Hotel (both 35 min drive) or Gowrie Park Wilderness Village (40 min drive).

BRADYS LAKE

Accomadation at Bradys will either be camping on site or at Tarraleah Village or Bronte Park Village. Participants will need organise their own accomadation

FOOD

All meals and food are self catered other than the two camp dinners

WEATHER and OTHER NOTES

Expect snow and rain, pack very warm gear including wet boots /water shoes. Also we will be at isolated sites so think carefully about things like asthma, snakes, leeches and sun.

CAMP DINNERS AND PRESENTATIONS.

There will be two camp dinners. The first dinner is a BBQ at Arm River Camp on the first night (Friday Dec 9th).This BBQ will be at 6.00pm and then followed by a presentation at Arm River from 7.00pm to 7.30pm.

The second camp dinner will be on Monday December 12th at either Tarraleah or Bronte park at 6.30pm followed by a preentation at 7.00pm till 8.00pm
